Conservation Impact

Protecting Aotearoa.

Every session, every outcome, every hectare. Real data from real hunters and landowners working together to protect New Zealand's native ecosystems.

Species Data

Every pest counted.

From possums to stoats to rats, every confirmed outcome is recorded and attributed. Transparent data that shows the real impact of community-driven pest control across Aotearoa.

Regional Impact

Nationwide reach.

From Northland to Southland, hunters and landowners across Aotearoa are making a measurable difference. Each circle on the map represents confirmed pest control outcomes in that region.

Data Methodology

How every number on this page gets here.

Conservation reporting only matters if it's honest. Two pathways feed counted kills, set by how the hunt was logged: an in-app session that follows a signed access agreement, or a Hunt Report filed after a hunt the hunter ran under their own authority (no agreement required). Whether the land was public or private is a separate classification recorded on each kill. Both pathways meet the same evidence and review gates before a kill ever appears in the public total above.

Pathway A: In-App Session
Step 1

Signed access agreement

The landowner and the hunter sign a Property Access Agreement on PestFree NZ. No agreement means no app-mediated session can begin.

Step 2

Check-in starts a session

The hunter checks in to start an active hunt session. The session is tied to one specific agreement, one property, one hunter, and a defined time window.

Step 3

Outcomes logged on-site

Kills are logged during the session: species, count, short description. Sessions that are cancelled never produce counted outcomes.

Pathway B: Hunt Report
Step 1

Hunter has their own authority

No app-mediated agreement is needed. The hunter is already cleared to be on the land, with a DOC or council permit on public land, or the landowner's permission on private land, arranged outside PestFree NZ. We don't gate access; we record the outcome.

Step 2

Hunt Report submitted to PestFree NZ

After the hunt the hunter files a Hunt Report on PestFree NZ: species, count, region, land classification (private or public), and photos. The Hunt Report is how any hunt done without an in-app agreement is added to the national tally.

Step 3

Admin review and approval

An admin reviews the Hunt Report. Only approved reports produce counted kills. Rejected reports never appear in the public total.

Common Gates: Both Pathways
Common gate

Photo evidence required

Every counted outcome carries at least one photo, regardless of pathway. No photo, no count. GPS and device metadata are stripped on upload. Photos live in a private bucket. Only the relevant parties and admins can view them, and only through short-lived signed URLs.

Common gate

Admin review at any time

PestFree NZ admins can flag and remove any outcome at any time. Flagged outcomes have their counted flag set to false and are excluded from every public stat on this page immediately and permanently.

Common gate

Aggregates are simple sums

The numbers on this page are plain SUMs of outcomes that pass the gates above. No modelling, no extrapolation, no estimates. The public/private split is derived server-side: from the landowner's classification of the property when the kill came through Pathway A, or from the hunter's classification on the admin-approved Hunt Report when it came through Pathway B.

What we do not count

  • Outcomes without photo evidence attached
  • Outcomes from cancelled hunt sessions (Pathway A)
  • Hunt Reports that admin reviewed and rejected (Pathway B)
  • Outcomes from agreements that were revoked before the session completed (Pathway A)
  • Records flagged or removed by admin review
Monthly Trends

Momentum building.

The shaded area is the running total of pests eliminated across Aotearoa, climbing month by month. It only moves in one direction, up, because every point is a verified outcome that has already passed our evidence and review gates. Real work, on real land.
